Notice from HPE - Unrecoverable drive failures after 32768 hours

Island Computers updates all drives, both Hard Drives and Solid State Drives, where and when necessary. to meet HPE strict maintenance eligibility and functionality requirements. In 2019, HPE determined errors in the firmware in a group of drives from a specific manufacturer of Solid State Drives.This causes the Solid State Drive to literally die  after 3.7 years of use (and is unrecoverable) The range of drives appears to be manufactured for HPE by Samsung - PM16xx based 12G SAS Drives. You must update the fiirmware to a minimum of HPD8 to avoid the "death" of your Solid State drive if listed above.
This may affect both HPE Integrity and HPE Proliant Servers. Firmware update utilities are available for free from support.hpe.com

Note: we have found the easiest way to update these is to pull the drives, and install in a linux 64 bit 6.10/7 server. The firmware update is seamless and fast.
The update does not remove any data from the drive in our experience though we strongly suggest backing up your drive(s) first.
Island Computers US Corp can provide this service to you for a fee of $50 per drive. It is typically turned around the same day. Large numbers of drives may require a day extra.
We will label the drive with the correct, updated firmware and package properly for return. We will either quote you based on weight and dims for overnight return or use your provided account number for shipping UPS/Fedex.
