VAT refund - UK Only

To get a VAT refund for a UK shipment, you must claim it directly from HMRC, as UPS pays these charges on your behalf but does not issue government refunds. The process depends on whether you are an individual or a registered business: [1, 2, 3]
  1. If you are VAT-registered: You cannot use HMRC claim forms. Simply reclaim the import VAT directly through your standard HMRC VAT return. [1, 2]
  2. If you are a private individual or not VAT-registered: You will need to claim it through the government.
Regardless of your method, you will need to provide HMRC with the Movement Reference Number (MRN), an EORI number (individuals can get an EORI assigned during the C285 process), and your proof of payment. [1]
Before you can submit these forms, you must get the official customs paperwork from UPS. You can request this by emailing archives@ups.com with your UPS tracking number and a request for your Entry Advice/import breakdown
